Field guide 02

Grand Rapids structural drying is controlled work—not a room full of fans.

A clear drying strategy identifies the wet assembly, creates suitable access, manages air and water vapor, checks changing conditions, and connects the finish line to the material involved.

Map before you mobilize

Visible staining can underestimate spread. Consider adjacent rooms, wall bases, floor transitions, cabinets, insulation, contents, and levels below.

Match the setup to the assembly

Air movement supports evaporation at surfaces. Dehumidification removes moisture from the air. Selective access may be considered where finishes block the intended path.

Monitor the right questions

Is the material responding? Are environmental conditions supporting the goal? Has the wet area changed? Does the setup need adjustment?

A credible finish line: conditions and material information support the transition toward cleaning, repair, or reconstruction planning. Appearance alone is not enough.
