01 / Clear the hazards

Keep out of wet electrical zones, unstable ceiling areas, questionable structural conditions, and contaminated water. Restrict access for children and pets.

02 / Control the source safely

Use an accessible shutoff when safe. Stop fixture use during a backup. Do not climb on a wet roof or enter an unsafe utility area.

03 / Check the connected spaces

From a safe area, look at rooms beside and below the source, floor transitions, wall bases, closets, contents, and utility zones.

04 / Document the working conditions

Photograph the source, full-room views, affected materials, contents, and safe shutoff actions. Note discovery time, weather, sump behavior, and changes.

05 / Make the call useful

Share source, time, spread, materials, odor, electrical concerns, and any backup. Ask what each proposed step is meant to accomplish.
